Job Description

Reporting to the Head of Technology, the Systems Engineer role offers the successful candidate unlimited potential to advance technical skills, offers experience with state-of-the-art technology and opportunity to learn from specialist digital media colleagues.

  • Provide technical support for VFX Artists using Linux workstations.
  • Install, deploy, and troubleshoot VFX tools including Flame, Maya, Nuke, Baselight as well as MPC developed tools.
  • Integrate off-the-shelf and custom applications into production pipelines.
  • Support and maintain infrastructure including Tractor based Render farm, Linux render nodes, Isilon storage, Linux servers and workstations, network equipment, and virtual machines.
  • Work and communicate with London headquarters and counterparts in other MPC offices around the globe.
  • Work with artists and producers to understand individual projects to serve as an expert resource.
  • Develop methods to streamline workflow and increase job delivery efficiency within budget and technical limitations.
  • Work with the team to design, develop and implement/install software tools to achieve the desired production goals.
  • Take ownership of and assist the engineering team with various evaluation, installation, development and decommissioning projects.
  • Stay informed of latest developments in data based workflows, audio and video systems and the general working practices of high-end commercial post production studios.
  • Manage preventative maintenance schedules.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Engineering level knowledge of standard CG, compositing and color grading applications (Maya, Houdini, Flame, Nuke and Baselight)
  • A minimum of 3 years UNIX/Linux, Mac OS X and Windows system administration experience.
  • Knowledge of programming with Python and other scripting languages such as bash, tcsh, and Perl.
  • Experience with scale strongly preferred. (Renderfarms, Clusters, Clouds, Enterprise, etc.)
  • Strong understanding of storage and networking, NFS, Isilon storage cluster, Brocade switch configuration and IFFFS framestores.
  • Basic understanding of color science principles is desirable.
  • Excellent communication, people skills, and team working skills.
  • Capacity to manage a busy workload with high productivity.

Your mission

  • Using your UNIX/LINUX server experience, including expertise in system installation, configuration, administration, troubleshooting, all under the supervision and in collaboration with the IT Manager;
  • Support a wide array of software packages both internally developed and purchased from third parties;
  • Support multiple hardware and operating system platforms including Windows, Linux, and occasionally Mac as well as related software, printers, networks, remote access, and connectivity;

Your qualifications

Responsibilities:

  • The role will give you the opportunity to work with older more traditional engineering aspects such as video, audio, colour science, suite design, cabling schedules and diagrams, along with new bleeding edge tech such as Docker, Kubernetes, cloud compute and hybrid infrastructures. You’ll be equally comfortable and excited by both.  

  • A large part of the job, as you would expect in a VFX environment, is Systems Administration biased and requires expertise in Linux and the usual software packages needed.

  • Operational experience and in-depth understanding of networks and network security requirements in a secure environment.

  • Working knowledge of NAS environments. (GPFS desirable but not essential).

  • Extensive experience of firewalls, network security hardware and software.  

  • Knowledge of other relevant security technologies and processes, e.g. encryption and authentication methods/ methodologies.  

  • Project Management throughout the lifecycle, including requirements capture, analysis, planning, design, implementation and testing.  

  • Track record of designing and deploying network solutions with working knowledge of network fundamentals such as DNS, DHCP, VLANS, Kickstarting etc etc.

  • Virtualization and Containerisation, and networking thereof.

  • Software administration (Autodesk Flame is highly desired).

  • Keeping up to date with latest hardware developments and be able to accurately specify builds for projects.

  • Hardware maintenance and fault finding.

  • Working within some very tight deadlines.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Qualified to degree level or equivalent in Computing/Systems/Engineering subject, you will have knowledge of Linux, OSX and Windows administration.

  • In-depth experience within a technical management role, working with vendors, understanding budgets and finance and the ability to effectively manage people and follow process.

Senior System Engineer – Storage

 Want to work with both highly creative and technical people, and enjoy movies?!  Animal Logic is looking for a Senior Systems Engineer who specialises in Storage to join its IT infrastructure team.

As the Senior System Engineer – Storage, you will be primarily responsible for Storage hardware and software installation and configuration; upgrades and patches; monitoring; performance tuning; documentation. You will also focus on the storage-related operational activities, take actions to ensure maximum performance, availability and reliability of the supported platform/technology. Practical NAS experience, with an emphasis on concurrent NFS and SMB client access, is very important.

This role is not for the faint hearted!  You will be working in a creative, dynamic and fast paced environment.

What you’ll bring:

  • 10+ years of experience planning, installing and administering NAS environments with a concurrent mixture of SMB and NFS clients. Strong experience with at least one of Dell/EMC Isilon or NetApp FAS storage in a NAS environment is essential. Experience with Veeam backup solutions and IBM Spectrum Protect (Tivoli Storage Manager) are highly desirable. Experience with NAS caching appliances such as Avere is desirable. Some experience with SAN technologies is desirable.
  • Experience in capacity planning, performance and tuning, volume and file systems management, clustering, replication and mirroring, backup/archive and recovery solutions, high availability and storage consolidation/migration.
  • Knowledge of information life-cycle management concepts and best practices.
  • Experience with High Performance Computing environments.
  • Ability to design, code, test and enhance scripts for automation and management of architecture services (e.g. Python, Shell, Powershell).
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, sound work methodology.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate or run special projects and meet deadlines.

As the Senior Systems Engineer - Network, you will be primarily responsible for the design, administration, maintenance and support of the availability, performance and security of the network systems that include Routers, Firewalls, Switches, Wireless, PBX platform and core infrastructure services.

You will also conduct network architecture design including feasibility and cost studies, ensure efficient utilization and management of network systems; and maximize business productivity by making core services powerful and flexible enough to meet changing production demands.

  • Plan and implement infrastructure resources to meet changing business requirements, with all appropriate documentation for support and user education.

-        Network protocols;, OSPF, BGP, DHCP, NTP, DNS, CIFS, NFS, SNMP, IKE/IPSec, RADIUS including use of and interaction with Active Directory.

-        Deployment, configuration and management of secure wireless network and VoIP technologies.

-        Design, implementation and maintenance of network security policies and devices (firewalls, WAF, SSL-VPN etc).

-        Formal project management methodologies and managing complex streams in parallel.

  • Ability to take on complex technical challenges, analyse options for technical/business suitability, and make recommendations to management with minimal supervision.
  • Expertise in scripting (e.g. Python, shell, Powershell, etc.) for automation and management of architecture services.
  • Ability to take a leadership role in infrastructure project management and implementation, ensuring technical quality and timeliness of delivery.
  • Exhibit initiative to work solo or as part of team.

Position Overview: 

The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in New York City is one of the premier science, research and cultural institutions in the country. The American Museum of Natural History is seeking a Systems Administrator to work with the Rose Center Engineering staff to maintain production systems and pipelines, systems related to the Hayden Planetarium digital dome, and audio video and interactive systems throughout the museum. Required Qualifications:
