Primary Responsibilities and Accountabilities 

Monitor, maintain and specify computer servers. 

Monitor, maintain and specify computer workstations. 

Monitor, maintain and specify internal networks. 

Monitor, maintain and specify externally facing networks. 

Maintain user accounts. Install and configure computer hardware operating systems and applications. 

Perform a range of tasks to ensure the highest level of security across the digital systems at ILM. 

Analyse, debug, isolate and remedy issues. 

Manage day to day operations such as deployments, networking changes, etc. 

Work cooperatively with the Technology team and with the wider set of colleagues at all ILM sites. 

Provide ad-hoc support, including procedural documentation and relevant reports as required 

 

Job Requirements   

·       Strong system administration experience required. 

·       Network administration experience required. 

·       Proven experience required across Linux, OSX and Windows platforms. 

·       Strong experience required across AD, DNS, DHCP, NIS , LDAP. 

·       Experience with VM configuration. 

·       Experience with configuration management systems eg. Ansible, Salt, CFEngine, etc. 

·       Experience with Microsoft Exchange administration. 

·       Linux command line and scripting skills eg. Bash/Csh/Python/Perl/etc. 

·       Provide direct user support when necessary, which includes hardware, software and    peripherals. 

·       Good knowledge of operating system internals. 

  

Required Skills / Competencies

The VR Pipeline TD is responsible for developing pipeline software tools, providing support to artists as it relates to production, and general troubleshooting of the VR pipeline in a production environment. Works with the VFX Supervisor to identify tools that ensure artists are working as efficiently as possible.

  • Develop pipeline and asset management tools that ensure artists and production staff are working and communicating in an efficient manner. This includes the setup of a full render farm pipe, render submission tools, and custom, targeted tools that allow artists to overcome problems and rote repeatable tasks.
  • Provide production support across a wide range of disciplines, troubleshoot assets and shots, and help artists with general problem-solving.
  • Collaborate effectively with artists, production supervisors, and technical staff to solve production emergencies. 
  • Identify day-to-day priorities for projects in production and act autonomously to complete them.
  • Work primarily on tools of a high degree of complexity, requiring broad understanding of the larger pipeline. 
  • Develop comprehensive knowledge of software and systems; contribute to evolving standards and conventions used in production. 
  • Update documentation for the pipeline and tools to reflect any changes that are made.

 

Required Skills / Competencies: 

  • Proficiency in Windows
  • Advanced Python scripting required
  • Experience in one or more of Maya, Nuke, Houdini, Mari, Arnold or similar
  • Thorough experience with VR pipelines, VR softwares, and VR hardwares.

We're seeking an experienced Head of IT / Senior Systems Engineer to take charge of our mixed Windows/Linux/Vmware infrastructure and managed network.

The role is assisted by a Systems Administrator and will be responsible for ensuring:

  • The reliability and performance of back end as well as endpoint machines

  • The integrity of our projects stored data and databases across all productions and externally hosted services

  • That servers, internet facing endpoints and hosted services are secured

  • That remote access to our network and selected services is available and secured

  • The high availability of all our virtualised servers (vSphere)

  • That our servers, workstations, render node resources are utilised effectively

  • That our servers, workstations, render nodes power and cooling requirements are met

 

Responsibilities:

The role will also be responsible for the planning, maintenance and expansion of:

  • Our network, firewalls, storage, renderfarm and endpoints

  • Our numerous AD and managed AV policies

  • The automation of OS/software deployments and users management (WDS, PDQ deploy)

  • Our internally developed tools (Bash, Python)

  • Our render manager, it's integration with our pipeline and with cloud hosted services

  • Our Google Apps advanced configurations and security policies

  • Our IP-PBX system (Asterisk)

  • Our backup processes, including offsite tape based backups (Python, HP Data Protector)

  • Our hardware and software maintenance contracts with vendors and suppliers

  • Escalated hardware or software support cases with vendors and suppliers

  • Our ticketing system

 

Required:

  • Ability to provide cost effective solutions to new hardware and software requirements

  • Ability to manage a busy work schedule, appropriately prioritise tasks and carry out assignments with accuracy and on time

  • Effectively select assignments and oversee their delegation to the second member of the team

  • Regularly and effectively communicate with pipeline TDs to ensure optimal integration between systems and pipeline.

  • Ability to closely work and effectively communicate with both technical and non technical staff.

  • A thorough understanding of networking principles, logical network partitioning and advanced network policies in use on managed enterprise switches (vlan routing, dhcp snooping, ip source guard etc.)

  • Strong Bash and Python scripting, and being adaptable in using any other scripting languages if required (eg. Powershell)

  • Ability to oversee the correct installation and connection of all equipment in our server rooms and floors to make sure that power and cooling requirements are met

  • Networking: Experience with setting up and managing LAN/WLANs, firewalls, dhcp servers, dns servers and vpn tunnel configurations

  • Hardware: A solid, broad understanding of current hardware technology, components and hardware troubleshooting procedures

  • Extensive experience in configuring, troubleshooting and securing Windows desktop systems, interpreting event logs, configuring Windows Server services and Active Directory policies

  • Extensive Linux experience with configuring and troubleshooting OS, hardware resources and services via cli

  • Experience with agent based and agentless enterprise monitoring tools / protocols (eg. Zabbix,graylog,snmp,lldp)

A DAY/WEEK IN THE LIFE

  • Setting up workstations for artists

    • Consulting with producer/director and moving the best workstation for the incoming artist into place.

    • Setting up Cintiqs or tablets, and updated software for said artists

 

  • Setting new artists up in our system

    • Making sure they have a login

    • Explaining file structure & setting up shortcuts to all software

    • Explaining (and enforcing) our naming conventions (camelCase)

    • If Maya or Nuke, explaining our custom tools

 

  • Installing various things

    • Fonts (very often)

    • Updating CC versions before new freelancers come in

    • Any extra software or plugins

    • Setting up remote access to speed this up

 

  • Maintaining workstation documentation

    • Updating active workstation spreadsheet

    • Updating numerous spreadsheets

 

  • Keep archiving & backups spreadsheet clean and current

    • Joining for wrap-up process meetings

    • Adding new projects to the spreadsheet

    • Helping Paul (our remote IT guy) with archiving. Communicating with him on the regular.

    • Helping to clean up / delete loose files on the server

 

  • Unarchiving assets from tape as needed

    • Learning how to unarchive cleanly

    • Working with artists to track down exactly what files are needed for the project

    • Keeping track of how much has been unarchived and clearing old goods

What You’ll Do:
Our visual effects production pipeline is a constantly evolving combination of commercial and open-source systems and highly specialized proprietary applications and plugins primarily using Python on Linux (some C++), developed and used by engineers and artists in San Francisco, Singapore, Vancouver, and London. You’ll help us build and distribute our software, and help the DevOps team automate the configuration, compilation, and release processes.  

 

You will:
Develop and support internal tools for software configuration and deployment, software build, continuous integration, versioning, and release automation.
Work with remote team members; support artists and engineers in other time zones. 

 

Education / Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in computing science, or equivalent professional experience.  

Good demonstrable experience in professional software development. 

VFX, feature animation, or episodic production experience is a bonus, but not essential
