The Sr. Render Systems Administrator works collaboratively with creative and technical teams to develop, operate and improve critical render farm infrastructure. As part of the IT infrastructure team, is fully responsible for selection and administration of hardware, operating systems and queuing software. Works with production and technology teams to troubleshoot and optimize render jobs, applications and pipeline tools.

 

Vendors and technologies we currently use include Tractor, RenderMan, Katana, Nuke, Isilon, Fedora, KVM, Arista, RabbitMQ, InfluxDB, PostgreSQL and Cfengine.

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Design, deploy and operate critical render farm infrastructure
  • Develop and operate tools to analyze and forecast farm resource utilization

QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.S. in Computer Science or equivalent degree or work experience.

The ideal applicant will be a UNIX expert with experience in Maya, Nuke, and Shotgun. A BC resident would be great, but we will consider permitting the perfect applicant.

The Senior Pipeline Technical Director is responsible for improving the overall efficiency of the production pipeline. Summary of Position

Pixar's Render Pipeline Group (RPG) designs, builds, and maintains the systems responsible for managing the Studio’s renderfarm cluster.  We focus on efficiently scaling our services and resources to support the Studio’s development and release schedule, with multiple projects simultaneously underway. At the same time we work closely with artists, programmers and engineers to guide them in the best approaches for effectively using the renderfarm.  Our collaboration across multiple teams supports and contributes to the Studio’s pioneering artistic ventures, charting a course to keep the Studio at the forefront of technical advances.

The software developer will work in an evolving production environment, requiring creative thinking, initiative, and collaboration across many groups and disciplines.  Responsibilities will involve improving the renderfarm scheduling and monitoring systems and software, including fixing bugs, developing new features, thoroughly testing releases, and seamlessly introducing the changes into production. The developer should be adept at engineering scalable network services, designing and implementing APIs, profiling I/O operations, optimizing database queries, and addressing operational issues.

RPG operates in an environment centered on Linux and Python and makes use of a variety of open-source solutions. Familiarity with database systems such as MySQL and version control systems like Git will help a new team member quickly come up to speed in our environment.  That said, we appreciate engineers with diverse backgrounds who can bring fresh viewpoints to our projects.  Expertise in Go, C/C++, Postgres, and web applications development will all prove valuable, as will familiarity with continuous deployment methodologies.

Animal Logic - the studio that brought you The LEGO Movie - is looking for a Senior Systems Engineer who is committed to supporting, managing and improving the overall efficiency in the usage of existing server/storage resources and core infrastructure in a mission critical production environment. This is a hands on role working within a fluid and dynamic environment.

 

Key responsibilities include:

 

  • Plan and implement infrastructure resources to meet changing business requirements, with all appropriate documentation for support and user education
  • Microsoft Exchange, Active Directory, MSSQL and other Microsoft Services
  • Implement and support a wide variety of software and hardware including Centos Linux and Microsoft Windows for desktop and server, VMWare, Palo Alto Firewalls, Brocade & HP Networking, Veeam Backup and Recovery
  • Improve departmental service and performance; reduce costs through process optimization, standardization and efficient utilization and management of infrastructure systems; and maximize business productivity by making core services powerful and flexible enough to meet changing production demands
  • Author functional and design specifications, build prototype systems, and use other appropriate techniques to achieve architecture definition and design goals
  • Support the overall technical goals in partnership with software, R&D and production groups
  • Undertake system diagnosis, repair, build, maintain, patches and install software as required
  • Investigate and liaise with concerned parties including vendors for problem resolution, support issues and handling complaints

 

To be successful in this role, the following is required of all candidates:

 

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a Systems Engineer role or similar
  • Bachelor or Master degree, or equivalent knowledge and experience are required in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Engineering or equivalent
  • An in-depth knowledge of infrastructure architectures and individual component relationships within an architecture (e.g. storage systems, DNS, directory services, mail servers, web servers, etc.), accompanied by broad knowledge in a number of other technical areas (e.g. networking, security etc.)
  • Knowledgeable regarding open architectures, protocols, and message formats
  • Expertise in scripting (e.g. Perl, shell, C, etc.) for automation and management of architecture services.
  • Ability to communicate and work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Excellent attention to technical details and ability to deliver accurate work
  • Proven ability to multi-task, prioritize, and problem solve
  • Foster and support a knowledge sharing culture
  • Ability to work towards, and meet, deadlines in high-pressure environment
  • Experience working within an Entertainment/Media industry is desirable
  • Certification in one or more of the following areas (ideal but not essential): Isilon, NetApp, Linux, Microsoft Windows, Brocade, Cisco, and/or Solaris

Competencies required

Axis Animation are undergoing an explosive expansion and seeking a SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR to join the tech support team on a permanent basis on site in our Glasgow studio. The role carries a high level of responsibility, providing technical support across 3 studios, and so we’re looking for an experienced administrator, with a broad background and the ability to support multiple technologies.


You’ll be a personable, pro-active, self starter who thrives working in a fast paced environment, capable of handling operational tasks in support of both general IT systems and in the operation of render farm systems. With good communication skills as well as analytical and problem-solving abilities, the ideal candidate will have an understanding and/or appreciation of the challenging nature of the animation/VFX industry. An ability to make decisions and perform well under pressure is essential.


The SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR will be responsible for the installation, maintenance and performance of systems hardware and software, including servers, network devices, workstations and associated kit. This individual will be responsible for supporting and implementing systems within our Glasgow, Bristol and London studios, ensuring that system hardware and software and general operating systems are functioning as required, enabling the teams to work effectively and efficiently.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs.

  • Perform regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions.

  • Participate in administration of backup operations.

  • Perform regular file archival and purge as necessary.

  • Create, change, and delete user accounts per request.

  • Support workstation management, imaging, and configuration.

  • Ensure proper documentation of systems and procedures.

  • Support physical security systems and ensure proper functioning.

Position Purpose

The Production Technical Assistant (PTA) is responsible for supporting Production Management and Artists in the areas of data/asset management and content delivery.

This position will be charged with ensuring proper organization/ingest of materials into our asset database, wrangling files/assets upon demand for external or internal sources, creating playlists, generating watermarked materials, and other support tasks as needed.

This position serves as the front-line production support. Pipeline and related issues should be initially handled by this position as they arise; if needed, this position can escalate to other parties as needed.

Beyond the above core needs, this position may also be tasked with writing and/or testing scripts or pipeline tools, depending on their scripting experience/skill level and available bandwidth. 

Essential Functions

Front-line Production Support

  • Handle and solve/delegate production issues as they arise. This position is the “fire fighter” of the production.
  • Train new users on pipeline and production systems. Ensure compliance with standards.
  • Support and enforce pipeline requirements, standards, and conventions such as naming conventions.
  • Act as a go-to for questions.
  • Assist artists as needed.

 

Asset/Data Management

  • Monitor and ensure proper organization of internal published asset data from Art, Editorial, Story, and other pre-production departments.
  • Ensure proper ingest of materials from vendors or other external clients.
  • Ensure proper disk utilization and regular cleanup of working data.
  • Create playlists of published data as needed for presentations/reviews.
  • Create watermarked materials as needed.
  • General support to ensure a smooth flow of data through the pipeline.

 

Delivery Coordination

  • Assess, identify data for, and perform file deliveries as needed for a wide range of materials. Determine best method of delivery based on standards and requirements.
  • Wrangle asset data or general show materials for adjunct/collateral (i.e., marketing) projects beyond the feature production.

 

Pipeline/Systems Support

  • Assist our development team with new pipeline tools and workflows.
  • Test new tools/workflows before they go into production.
  • Test and debug functions from both systems/IT and pipeline.

 

Other Responsibilities

  • General Production support.

Qualifications: 

 

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor (4-year) degree
  • Proficient in OSX, Linux, and Windows
  • Proficient in command-line operations
