Systems Administrator 

NSC Creative requires a Systems Administrator to play an important and diverse role in managing the team’s IT systems used for CGI and VFX projects. The primary responsibility of the role is to ensure maximum uptime for the team of 20 artists and 50+ node render farm. An interest in the CG film making process is essential. Specialist training will be provided where necessary for the right candidate.

You will work under the direction of the Head of NSC Creative and communicate with the main non-CGI office IT staff as necessary.

 

Requirements

  • Excellent troubleshooter

  • Take the initiate to keep the studio IT systems in good working order

  • General networking knowledge in a windows environment

  • Knowledge of VFX/CG industry standard software

  • Ability to interact with team effectively

  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision

 

Main Tasks

  • Respond to and resolve user hardware and software issues

  • Maintain consistency of all production software across render farm and workstations

  • Validate software updates before deployment

  • Manage licenses for all software

  • Manage backups, archive and disaster recovery systems across disk, LTO and off-site

  • Manage storage policies on Linux GPFS based storage system

  • Ensure company best practice and security policies are adhered to

 

Additional Tasks

  • Monitor calibration

  • Assist artists with troubleshooting software related render problems

  • Perform computer updates such as HDD, RAM and GPU.

  • Research and benchmark new hardware and software to inform IT purchasing decisions

  • Manage purchasing and administration of IT software and hardware

  • Manage distribution data for planetarium shows, includes file management, duplication to external hard drives and shipping drives abroad

  • Administer user google apps accounts

 

Key software

  • OS: Windows Server 2012, Windows 7, Windows 8

  • Autodesk 3dsmax, Maya and related plugins

  • Adobe CC and related plugins

Qualifications

  • No specific qualifications are required but experience in the main tasks and knowledge of key software or similar is essential.

  • A relevant degree is desirable

 

Bonus Skills

  • Scripting (Python, Perl, bash or other relevant languages)

  • Knowledge of Arcserve Backup Software

  • Linux (CentOS) configuration knowledge

  • Mac configuration knowledge

  • Knowledge of high speed networks including 10Gbit and 40Gbit

  • Knowledge of Shotgun or other Project Management tools and pipeline integration

  • AV knowledge with projectors and playback systems

  • Knowledge of camera systems and equipment in DSLR and 4k capture workflows



Permanent full-time position 37.5 hours a week

Some out of office hours work may be required to perform essential maintenance

Job Description

Responsible for the overall Mac and Media lifecycle and ecosystem of hardware, software and related End User Support – ensuring all corporate Mac users in a Creative Services environment receive superior technical support.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assists IT Coordinator in answering help desk calls, entering tickets, processing, monitoring and prioritizing tickets

  • Resolves all Mac and Media related support requests companywide.

  • Performs basic to advanced diagnostics on all related Media Suites and equipment and escalate to Engineers or

    Vendor support when necessary

  • Partners with Business Analyst - Digital to implement and deploy Mac and Media standards; build, configure,

    test, secure, deploy, update, manage, inventory and optimize Mac and Media environment

  • Supports/Manages/Maintains user facing hardware and software including connecting clients to the Fiber SAN

  • Maintains a working lifecycle for fleet of hardware and software and rotate as necessary

  • Maintains software, OS and version patch management using Casper and other deployment tools

  • Remains current on related technologies, industry and ecosystem to make recommendations as needed to IT

    management and beyond.

  • Assists with planning, budgeting and forecasting of yearly hardware and software needs.

  • Responds to major computer problems after-hours as needed

  • Provides setup and support of video conferencing and related technologies between both internal and external

    locations as necessary

  • Supports the copier and printer fleet within the organization. Resolves basic issues and escalate to vendor when

    necessary

  • Assists with support, maintenance and calibration of color output devices

  • Develops documentation and training guides as necessary

  • Facilitates, tests, and manages the introduction of new user facing software and technologies into the

    organization

  • Enforces all IT Policies and Procedures

  • User level administration, authorization, account management and access controls of Active Directory,

    Microsoft Exchange, basic file/folder shares and related technologies

    BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology or equivalent experience

    • Minimum five years of experience in Mac Technical Support role(s). Corporate and creative environments

      preferred

    • Previous experience with business level software and hardware support in a networked environment (LAN)

  • Previous experience with OS and Application configuration, deployment, troubleshooting and support skills with OS X,

  • Previous experience with networks system design (LAN,WAN,TCP/IP, DNS, Certificates)

  • Previous experience diagnosing/researching simple or complex user related computer problems

POSITION OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Director of Information Technology, the Unix System Administrator will be responsible for the implementation, maintenance and performance of Linux servers and desktops, LDAP and the render farm.

PRIMARY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

  • Implementation, maintenance and performance of Linux servers including MySQL.

Education/Experience:

  • At least 1 year of experience working within an artistic/production environment or industry.

About the Position

As the junior systems administrator you will support projects involving high performance technologies in the areas of large-scale systems administration and engineering, including building, installing, deploying and supporting end-user laptops and workstations.

Responsibilities

System Administration

  • Provide desktop support to production staff and artists’ workstations
  • Take a lead role in assisting production staff, artists and software department with technical problems

Education and Experience:
- BS degree in Computer Science, Engineering or other technical field desired
- experience in a media and entertainment environment is preferred
- Experience administrating multiple operating systems, including
Windows, OSX and Linux
- Must have experience in Active Directory and exchange environments
- Experience with large volume NAS devices like Isilon a plus
- Experience with scripting languages like python or bash
- Experience with Cisco ASA and Networking services a plus
- Knowledge of 2D and 3D applications a plus, including Foundry and
Autodesk products.
- Must be a strong team player and have the ability to work independently
- Must be able to take as well as give direction positively
- Must contain very strong trouble shooting skills
- Must have strong communication and documentation skills
