System Administrator (Los Angeles)

Luma Pictures is an artist centric feature film VFX studio located two blocks from the beach in Santa Monica, California.  We maintain a unique culture with an amazingly talented staff and are always on the lookout for exceptional people for full time and project positions.

The ideal candidate will be able to contribute to many aspects of our production network; including user support, OS management and scripting. 

The precise tasks can vary depending on what you bring to the table, but some of the outstanding responsibilities are:

- Manage and troubleshoot hardware and software issues on user workstations running Linux or OSX

- BASH and/or Python scripting to increase production in our area of supporting the artists

- Assisting with other items such as power issues, building issues and other general issues

- Deploying workstations, rendernodes and servers for production use

- First point of contact for user issues

Qualifications:

- Advanced knowledge of Fedora, CentOS/RHEL and OSX including software management and deployment

- Advanced knowledge of and experience with networking concepts and network implementations including routing, VLANs, firewalls, traffic inspection

- Advanced knowledge of DNS, LDAP, HTTPS, FTP, SSH, VNC and other common protocols

- Knowledge of Data Backup concepts and software (Netvault, Bacula etc) 

- Extremely proficient with gnu/linux rpm-based distributions 

- Ability to lead in advanced troubleshooting without guidance for hardware, software and networking issues

- Advanced knowledge of hardware RAID, software RAID, lvm, ext3/4, NFS

- Advanced knowledge of linux network commands including NetworkManager, host, nslookup, dig, ifconfig, ip, route, netstat, ping, iptables etc. 

- Solid understanding of packet flow, tcp and udp transmissions

- Advanced knowledge of sysv, init scripts and startup and login process for linux and osx systems

- Advanced knowledge of virtualisation concepts and implentations

- Knowledge of rpm repository mirroring and rpmbuild for custom repos

- Advanced knowledge of security concepts including best practice and auditing 

- Knowledge of VPN technologies including site-to-site VPN tunnels

- Puppet management system knowledge

- Ability to manage large data sets / projects

- Customer service experience

Pluses:

- Advanced knowledge of xenserver administration including p2v

- Knowledge of openldap 

- Familiar with visual effects shops, pipelines or similar

Systems administrator position open at LipSync Post LTD.

Duties comprise of managing a range of activities in this growing mid-sized visual effects company based in the heart of Soho. Primarily based on Linux (CentOS and Fedora), this position will require creating, managing, and supporting servers, workstations, dealing with centralised software and licence server installation, virtual machines, and facilitating pipeline.

We're looking for the following skills:

- Basic knowledge of the the VFX leading software packages (e.g. Maya, Nuke, ...)

- Knowledge of at least Python and Bash. Perl is a bonus but not compulsory

There is currently a vacancy for the position of Systems Administrator. The Administrator works in collaboration with VFX Supervisors, Compositing Supervisors, 3D Animators and Production staff to advise management and clients.

Responsibility:

  • Ensure systems run reliably according to production needs.
  • Installation, deployment, and troubleshooting of common VFX tools and internally developed tools including Baselight, Flame, Maya, Nuke.
  • Integrate off the shelf and custom applications into production pipelines.
  • Responsible for infrastructure including Tractor based Renderfarm with netbooted Linux render nodes, Isilon Storage Cluster, Linux Servers and Workstations, Network Equipment, etc.
  • Work and communicate with London headquarters and counterparts in other MPC offices around the globe.
  • Keep abreast of latest developments in VFX products and practices.
  • Work with artists and producers to understand individual projects to serve as an expert resource and advise on technology related issues, and ways to streamline workflows and deliver jobs within budget and technical limitations.
  • Direct support of end users. workstation deployment, monitor calibrations, general IT issues including email and Internet access.
  • Develop and enhance all stages of the pipeline.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • System Administration experience with an emphasis on UNIX/Linux.
  • Familiarity with Python and UNIX Shell scripting. Tcsh, Perl, PyQt, C++ a plus.
  • Familiarity with SQL Databases. MySQL and Postgres experience a plus.
  • Experience with scale strongly preferred. (Renderfarms, Clusters, Clouds, Enterprise, etc.)

The Desktop Support Technician will assist staff in a creative studio environment on technical desktop support including installation, testing and location setup of workstations and peripherals. RESPONSIBLITIES

  • Setup, install, configure and provide support of desktop computers, peripheral equipment and software.

QUALIFYING EXPERIENCE

  • Some Linux and networking knowledge is an asset

The candidate should have a strong (senior level) background in systems/storage administration as well as a proven history of successful project management and budgeting. Purpose of the job: The Senior Media Systems Engineer assists the Chief Engineer in a variety of maintenance and help-desk tasks. The role requires interacting on a daily basis with artists and production staff to make sure that they are able to complete their own tasks with a minimum of down time or confusion. The successful candidate will work with display systems, video editing and archiving systems, as well as digital projection, and computer systems to accomplish these goals. An aptitude for electronics, displays and computers are essential. Experience in managing and maintaining cross site multi-location media system setups is also key. An outgoing, helpful manner will go a long way.

 

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

  • Monitor calibration, including desktop HP Dreamcolors and all Plasma/LED TVs
  • Verifying that all view station room equipment is working on a daily basis
  • Verifying the integrity of all conference room equipment on a daily basis
  • Maintain projection room equipment as required
  • Collaborate with Editorial staff to create Avid archives; restore jobs as requested by Vid-I/O and Editorial staff
  • Be the Admin for the Avid Unity: install and/or remove partitions as needed, set user permissions, etc.
  • Perform Avid upgrades or downgrades as needed, including adding/deleting users from each workstation
  • Be the point person for the conference rooms and view rooms, be responsible for user training where needed, escalate problems to the appropriate departments as needed.
  • Some wiring and assembling of audio and video equipment, as required.

 

Qualifications:

 Education and/or Experience Required:

  • A specific degree is not required; however, an electronics-related degree would be useful. An Associate degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school would be appropriate.
  • Ability to assemble and wire up devices is a big plus, as is the ability to make cables and assemble connectors.
  • Experience with computer software and operating systems, especially OSX and Linux, preferred
  • Prior experience with professional video and/audio systems is a plus
  • Prior experience with conference room systems (video presence) is a plus
  • Enthusiastic, helpful, willing to engage with users and help them solve problems is a big requirement

 

Working Conditions and Environment/Physical Demands: 

 

  • Office working environment.
  • Hours for this position are based on normal working hours but will require extra hours pending production needs.
